The Event
Songs Inside The Box includes music performed by cigar box guitar artists from across the US. Most of the documentary was shot at the 3rd Annual Cigar Box Guitar Extravaganza in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Extravaganza is organized each year by Decatur, Alabama artist and musician, Matt Crunk, who began building his own instruments several years ago. It takes place at the Flying Monkey Arts Center, a not for profit community arts collective. The Flying Monkey is housed in Lowe Mill, an old cotton mill that was used as an amunition factory during World War II. The loading dock makes a wonderful outdoor performance area and is the setting for most of the performances in Songs Inside The Box. Artist Yuri Ozaki, who has a shop in the Flying Monkey, was onhand making beautiful watercolors of the performers which we used in the opening and closing sequences of the documentary. The backdrop for the stage was created by Matt Crunk who also created the poster to promote the event. (Shown below)
Other events have brought together groups of cigar box guitar enthusiasts, but the 3rd Annual Cigar Box Guitar Extravaganza was lovingly called "the world's largest cigar box guitar concert ever!"
It began at noon and ended at 2:00 a.m. the next day!
